Today, December 3, the South Carolina Department of Education will meet to discuss several items, including the recommendations from the Instructional Materials Review Committee (which include the recommendation to restrict another book, in addition to the seven which were previously banned statewide).
Another topic which is likely to come up is Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver’s formal adoption of instructional materials from PragerU.
You can read more about that partnership here:
It will be interesting to see how, or if, the Board balances Weaver’s adoption of the PragerU materials with the regulation Weaver, herself, pushed to adopt, which gives the State Board ultimate authority to remove instructional materials that are not “age or developmentally appropriate,” a definition which seems to change with each meeting.
The meeting begins at 1PM at the Department of Education building (details on the location (details on the location here) and should also be available to stream here.
Is this a meeting that the community may attend? I’ve been wondering how many schools will actually use prager u material, and if there is a way to opt out if any of it finds its way to my child’s class.
